Entrepreneurial Value Creation Leadership Coaching Q&A:

Who are your clients?

I work with business leaders who aspire to be extraordinary. Many are already highly successful CEOs looking to expand and implement new ventures, either internal or external to the organization. Others are the next generation of CEOs and leaders who want to advance their professional growth to achieve extraordinary results.

My clients have the desire to excel and the self-awareness to realize that they can accelerate and amplify their success through focused attention, an infusion of new ideas and confidential collaboration and feedback. Together, we build a customized plan for personal and professional growth that is laser sharp in focus and action.

What is unique about your coaching?

For me, coaching is a passion for helping entrepreneurial leaders succeed that has evolved out of my own business and Wharton teaching experience. I think that’s given me a unique perspective on how to push CEOs to be the best and to excel beyond their initial limits.

Over the past 25 years, I’ve had the opportunity to work, study, teach and coach with some of the best minds in business and top CEOs around the world. I know firsthand what it means to be accountable for P&L, new ventures, corporate growth and acquisition strategies in companies from a variety of industries.  My research at the London School of Economics focused in-depth on successful corporate growth and diversification strategies. In Wharton’s intensive Advanced Management Program, I examined CEO-driven issues of leadership, personal and organizational change, and competitive strategy with top-level executives from leading organizations around the world. And in ten years teaching at Wharton, I have forged close relationships with exceptional CEOs from around the world, Wharton faculty and an incredibly talented group of MBA students of all ages and experience levels.

I think this combination of an in-the-trenches experience, research-based analysis and a network of innovative business thinkers and leaders affords me a depth and breadth of insight that I apply to every individual I coach.

How does a CEO or leader benefit from working with you as a coach?
Often, my clients are successful leaders who want to stretch still further to accomplish personal aspirations in business, their communities and the world. As a coach, I serve as catalyst and confidante to help them focus on and fulfill those goals – and I draw on the best and brightest in business, government and education to generate transforming ideas, connections and opportunities.

We target what the client is trying to achieve, chart a course of action that leads to real outcomes and maintain a close, confidential relationship that often lasts far beyond the official coaching engagement.

Depending on their goals, my clients have been able to:

  • accelerate their professional growth and career success
  • sharpen their business acumen
  • increase their social capital through high-level networking
  • improve their own net worth
  • create cutting-edge strategies for their business
  • inspire their teams and organizations to achieve exceptional results
True entrepreneurial leadership is a process of discovery. And great entrepreneurial leadership happens in a climate of high impact. My role is to help you accomplish both.

How does a coaching engagement proceed?
Each coaching engagement is customized to fit the needs of the situation. The initial step is coming to a thorough understanding of what your goals are, both personally and organizationally.

When the primary goal is organizational – for example, identifying and/or implementing a new growth strategy for your firm – I follow a process similar to the approach I would use in consulting with an organization, but work more closely with you. Following a situational analysis that includes market opportunities and pitfalls, organizational infrastructure, finances and human resources, I research market opportunities and come back to you with a customized profile and set of options to achieve your goal. Together, we evaluate which has the highest potential for success and what feels like the best fit for you and your organization, and we map out a strategy for testing and implementation. I usually stay closely involved throughout execution, and when needed, can take on direct implementation management responsibilities.

When personal leadership development is involved (either as the key goal or part of organizational goals), I also gather input from others whose perspectives and opinions can be crucial to your success. We discuss a range of ideas and options, many of which will chart new territory in terms of personal experience. And together, we build a highly focused plan for personal and professional growth that includes specific targets in areas like gaining experience in new fields, educational achievement, leadership development and high-level networking.

In all cases, we concentrate on implementing and accomplishing short-term steps that lead to long-term goals. The active feedback technique that I use focuses us on delivering best results, and has been successfully implemented and well received in many different situations.

Why would a successful CEO or executive hire a coach?
The typical CEO is isolated from talking candidly to his or her colleagues about personal goals, or about internal and external organizational issues. Consulting firms often work with their clients’ competitors, which can make it uncomfortable to discuss details that might reveal an organization’s competitive advantages or weaknesses.

What I bring as a coach is the candid perspective of an experienced outsider, dedicated to helping you succeed at whatever your goal may be – from developing new personal strengths, to building personal wealth, to innovating and creating new growth and profitability for your organization.

How frequently should a coach and executive work together?
Our initial meetings are key to creating a high-impact coaching outcome, but after that the frequency of contact is really driven by the goals and needs of the individual engagement. I immerse myself in the situation and then organize action items to fit the assignment. As a coach, I am totally available to my clients through meetings, phone calls and e-mail, and am flexible as to the hours and timing of the engagement.
